Watermark PDF

Stamp confidential, draft, or custom text on your PDF pages instantly.

What Is a PDF Watermark?

A PDF watermark is text or an image stamped across the pages of a document — typically as a semi-transparent overlay. Watermarks serve several purposes: marking a document as confidential, indicating its status (DRAFT, APPROVED, VOID), identifying the document owner or source, or deterring unauthorized distribution by embedding visible attribution.

Watermarks are embedded directly into the PDF file, meaning they appear consistently across every PDF viewer, on every device, and when the document is printed. Unlike adding a text box in a PDF editor, a watermark applied with this tool is part of the page content and cannot be removed without editing software.

Common Watermark Use Cases

CONFIDENTIAL

Mark sensitive business documents, legal agreements, or financial reports before sharing with external parties.

DRAFT

Indicate that a document is not yet final — preventing recipients from treating an in-progress version as authoritative.

SAMPLE

Distribute preview copies of reports, templates, or proposals while clearly indicating they are not the final deliverable.

Company Name / Logo Text

Brand your documents by adding your company name, making it clear who produced the content if it is shared onward.

DO NOT COPY

Deter unauthorized reproduction of documents with proprietary information, pricing data, or copyrighted content.

VOID

Invalidate a document — useful for marking superseded contracts, expired certificates, or cancelled invoices.

How to Add a Watermark to a PDF

  1. 1
Upload your PDFSelect or drag your PDF into the upload area. The file is loaded locally in your browser.
  2. 2
Enter your watermark textType the text you want to appear across the pages — e.g., "CONFIDENTIAL", "DRAFT", or your company name.
  3. 3
Apply and downloadClick the watermark button. Your PDF downloads immediately with the text stamped diagonally across every page.

100% Private — No Upload Required

The watermarking process runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your PDF file is never sent to any server. This is especially important for the type of documents that typically need watermarks — confidential contracts, internal reports, financial statements, and proprietary materials. You can watermark sensitive documents with complete privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the watermark appear on every page?

Yes. The watermark is applied to all pages in the document. Each page receives the same diagonal text stamp, regardless of page content or orientation.

Can the watermark be removed by the recipient?

The watermark is embedded into the page content layer of the PDF. It cannot be removed without PDF editing software (like Adobe Acrobat Pro). For most recipients using standard PDF viewers, the watermark is permanent.

Can I customize the font size, color, or position?

The current tool applies a standard diagonal grey watermark at a fixed size and position optimized for readability across different page sizes. Advanced customization options (color, opacity, size, position) are planned for a future update.

Does watermarking affect the original file?

No — the tool creates a new PDF with the watermark applied. Your original file remains unchanged on your device. The downloaded file is the watermarked version.
